The Northwest School, Seattle USA. A unique college preparatory high school experience
Real life is layered and complex, with intersecting experiences marking every day. We at the Northwest School believe that learning should be that way, too. Integrated and multi-dimensional.
We at the Northwest School believe that true intellectual growth requires going beyond a command of facts or figures.Students are challenged with an exciting college-preparatory academic experience rooted in vigorous study and exploration. Because real learning happens outside one’s comfort zone, we encourage students to be bold. To seek answers in new places. To take a fresh approach, rather than just the next logical step. It’s what keeps learning exciting and makes it personal.
At the Northwest School, students learn the important life skill of stepping forward and participating in ways that are both personal and meaningful. It starts with a courteous and supportive community, in which students are safe to express opinions, ask questions, and try new skills. It continues with a faculty dedicated to helping each student discover his or her individual learning strengths and style. Students see that intelligence and creativity aren’t fixed; they can be nurtured and developed. As students learn more about how they learn, they become strong self-advocates—identifying what they need to continue growing intellectually—and using that self-knowledge to make powerful, personal contributions to their community.

The Northwest School, Seattle. Where Modern Meets History.
The Northwest School campus is anchored in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, one of the most beautiful American cities and home to Microsoft, Starbucks, Boeing, Amazon, Expedia, and Costco. Set in the heart of the city—within walking distance from museums, art studios, shore of the Pacific Ocean, famous Pike Place market, first Starbuck store and the Space Needle —The Northwest School offers a vibrant, urban campus pulsing with history and creativity.
The school’s main building, constructed in 1905, is a designated historic landmark. Over 100 years old, The Northwest School main building has retained its distinctive features. Above its arched entryway hangs The Northwest School sign, carved by artist Richard Beyer. The north and south ends of the main building are graced with wide staircases and oak bannisters, designed by well-known architect James Stephen in 1905.
Modern Classrooms & Facilities
The Northwest School classrooms brim with personality. The walls are lively with artwork, maps, portraits, wise sayings, and many are named after inspiring leaders. Designed for flexibility, the Biology, Earth Science, Physics, and Chemistry classrooms allow students the freedom to explore and engage in open-ended science projects. The main building also houses a photo lab, dance and ceramic studios, one of two theaters, library, and counselors’ offices.
Located just across the street from the original building, the school's new building brings many elements of daily student life into one exciting space. This “vertical campus” makes smart use of every square inch, featuring a basketball and volleyball court, 175-seat Theatre, two-tiered Dining Room, the Rooftop Sports Field, and a fitness center.
The Northwest School residential dormitory is located on campus and houses approximately 60 students on gender-specific floors. Students live two to a room, sometimes with a roommate from a different country. Experienced residential advisors are always present, and students enjoy full housing amenities, nutritious meals prepared by our professional kitchen staff, and evening and weekend outings.

Our signature Humanities program combines the study of literature, history, philosophy, culture and art history in a three-year, chronological sequence. Classes meet each week in lectures, small-group discussions, and writing conferences with three to four students. The Humanities program develops higher order thinking skills by asking students to synthesize concepts and facts from history and to apply them to current situations. International Students who do not fully meet our English proficiency requirements are offered The Humanities program with the English language support.
The Mathematics at Northwest prepares students for college-level mathematics and other STEM fields, teaches students to become creative and independent problem solvers, and strives to motivate students to appreciate the elegance and wonder of mathematics. Math courses include Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Math Analysis, Calculus, Advanced Calculus, Mathematical Modeling with Financial Applications, and Statistics.
Science program includes courses in Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Advanced Physics, and Advanced Chemistry. Open-ended lab work teaches students to devise ways of exploring and testing scientific concepts. Our program provides rare opportunities for field research in ethnobotany, photochemistry, and field ecology.
Our arts classes are taught by professional artists, dancers, and musicians, who believe that a well-rounded education depends upon an understanding of the creative process that only participation in many art forms can produce. The arts are fundamental to our educational experience—every student taking two arts classes at all times—giving students opportunities to express themselves, stretch outside their comfort zones, and envision new pathways to problem-solve. The school offers over 50 different courses in Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts.
We offer the students 30 teams in Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country, Track and Field, and Ultimate Frisbee. The school also supports highly competitive athletes in extramural city and regional teams in such sports as golf, crew, and kayaking.
