Why is Indian Springs School One of the Top 50 Boarding Schools in America?
On campus, we celebrate Learning through Living, which underscores our belief that students learn more, are more engaged, and are happier when they can be as hands-on with their learning as possible. It is not uncommon to see a group of students building a game-winning A.I. algorithm, designing a practical initiative to reduce carbon emissions, developing black-and-white analog photographs in a dark room, and more.
From the earliest writings that brought our school into being, we have referred to ourselves as the “school community,” conspicuously linking teachers and students into a passionate and welcoming academic village.

With over 350 acres at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, our “academic village” is unlike any other. It includes state-of-the-art learning and performing arts facilities, residential halls, athletic fields, a 12-acre lake, an organic garden, and more. We are located just fifteen miles south of Birmingham, Alabama and share a border with a 10,000-acre state park that offers one of the largest varieties of outdoor activities in the entire country. On weekends, boarding students often have the option to go hiking, mountain biking, paddleboarding, and more, and because our climate is warm year-round, our students have access to these resources and activities throughout the entirety of the school year.

Because our Student Government is set up like a town council run by students, our students learn to balance freedom and responsibility in community life.

For nine years, we have been rated the #1 private high school in the state, and we consistently rank as a top 50 boarding school in the country. We work hard to ensure that tuition is not a barrier for great-fit students to enroll at Indian Springs. Last year, we awarded 2.5 million in financial aid, and we have a number of Vietnamese students who pay between $40,000 - $45,000 per year.

We invite you to see firsthand what makes Springs such a unique and special place. You can do that by visiting for a tour, shadow day, or open house. We also host a virtual open house in January and are hosting a virtual “Meet our Vietnamese Families” event in December. If you are interested in signing up for any of these events, please reach out to [email protected]. We hope to see you on campus, in Vietnam, or at a virtual event soon!
