International Scholarship awards are offered to enrolled first time freshmen who have achieved two of three criteria: a high school average of 88 or higher, an SAT (combined Evidenced-Based reading and writing and math) score of 1140, or an ACT composite score of 23 or higher, or a TOEFL/IELTS score of 79 or 6.5. Students with high academic achievements are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship that is $1,255 for each semester at Buffalo State for a total of $10,000. 1. Computer Information Systems
International students have opportunities to gain experience working at our on-campus technology support desk to build their skills while studying in their program. The computer information systems program prepares students for entry-level positions, such as programmer, systems analyst, or network support in the computer field, and provides them with the technical knowledge and managerial skills necessary for a wide range of subsequent career paths. There is a growing demand in all sectors for individuals with this combination of capabilities. This program was developed with the cooperation of employers and information systems professionals and, unlike a computer science program, its emphasis is on commercial applications of computers rather than theory. The CIS internship course gives students valuable work experience and has transitioned a number of students into full time positions in companies including M&T Bank, Frontier Science, Delaware North, and Kaleida Health.
2. Data Science and Analytics
The M.S. in Data Science and Analytics offers advanced practical training for in-demand modern skills to manipulate, organize and present data essential for informed, evidence-based decision-making and planning across industries. This program is open to students with basic programming and statistical skills from all undergraduate majors. Courses cover highly marketable techniques using data analytics tools, computer coding, machine learning, geospatial programming, data design, visualization, and analysis. Students will develop professional skills in project management, communications, data governance, and creative problem-solving for effective collaboration. Unique components of the program include workshops with local experts and an applied-skills internship with industry partners.
3. Hospitality and Tourism Administration
The Hospitality and Tourism curriculum prepares graduates for management positions in various aspects of the hospitality industry. Career opportunities exist for: graduates in special events and convention services; cruise lines; sales and marketing; corporate and contract services; airlines and travel; resorts and lodging; food and beverage, culinary, food trucks and menu development; catering and retail; clubs; education and training; healthcare and assisted living; community relations; business development; revenue, finances and purchasing; human resources, customer service; wines and spirits, and other components of industry/business. The department’s mission is to educate and develop proven hospitality professionals by integrating a strong core curriculum with a deliberate emphasis on experiential learning. ISSS Office Support: The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office provides support to your student from the acceptance into the school until graduation day. Our office assists with course advising, visa compliance, support in employment opportunities, registration for required health insurance, cultural events, programming and transportation from the Buffalo Niagara Airport when they arrive the first time. ISSS has the tools to your student be successful, graduate, and go above and beyond their education. Anything from visa paperwork, advising for courses, OPT employment support and more. Project-based, Real World Experiences: Our faculty create project-based learning programs that partner with existing companies to create opportunities for students to make connections and earn real industry experience. For example, the new Data Science and Analytics program is partnered with Google to provide courses that build industry standard skills. These are the skills that help students get hired right after graduation.
OPT Support: Currently, 30% of all SUNY Buffalo State international students apply for OPT after graduation. Since many international students have applied learning opportunities in their classes before they graduate, 95% of students that apply, find OPT placements. The key to that success rate is the working relationship our faculty has with established companies where students can intern and work on projects as part of applied learning in the classroom. Buffalo State also has a dedicated International student department where you can receive one-on-one advising and assistance and support with their OPT application.
Health Insurance: International students are required by the State University of New York to purchase health insurance coverage through Buffalo State. This is estimated to be $680 per semester. COVID 19 costs are covered.
