Sacred Heart-Griffin High School: A Value Education in the Midwest to Succeed in College and Life!

Every school promises to prepare your child for success: academic, professional, and maybe even financial. But will they prepare your child for a successful life? A life of ethics, virtues, and, most of all, purpose?

As a Catholic school, the motto of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School (SHG) is Veritas, “Truth” in Latin. At SHG, students learn in the Catholic tradition, a philosophy the Springfield Dominican Sisters have taught to students in the Springfield area since the 19th century. In teaching students to pursue Truth in all classes, conversations, and activities, an SHG graduate is prepared to excel professionally and personally.

Full scholarships (100%) are available. The typical international award is typically around $2000 off of tuition. 99% of all students receive scholarships immediately after acceptance. SHG keeps tuition costs low to maximize the savings for families while offering them a high value investment in a safe, medium-sized community. With Midwestern-accent English, rigorous academics, nurturing community, and a pursuit of Truth, International Student SHG alumni are prepared to succeed in all aspects of life.

As a Catholic school welcoming all students regardless of faith background, SHG provides students with the tools to live with integrity, meaning, and ethical values. An SHG graduate steps onto a university campus prepared to pursue Truth and live the Four Dominican Pillars: Study, Service, Community, and Contemplation.

Study: SHG offers a student-centered classroom and teachers always available to communicate outside of school hours. SHG offers eleven Advanced Placement classes to earn college credit while still in high school with a proven track record of student success on AP exams. It also offers dual-credit classes during the senior year in conjunction with the local community college focusing on business and finance.

Service: SHG students are given multiple opportunities throughout the year to do community service acts under the guidance of SHG faculty. Also, SHG service drives are led by SHG students providing them opportunities to develop their leadership abilities.

Community: The quality of the Host Family Experience is SHG’s top priority for International Students. International Students are matched with a local host family that receives intercultural communication training from SHG International Coordinator Michael Carlson and is invested in the well-being, happiness, and academic success of the International Student. The SHG Community is committed to ensuring that International Students’ culture is honored at SHG, just as it is dedicated to helping International Students learn about American culture.

Contemplation: “Be who you are meant to be!” are the words of the Dominican saint Catherine of Siena and that is what SHG continues to tell students in 2021. In the spirit of Catherine of Siena, SHG honors students' individual spiritualities and encourages them to grow in contemplation in their own traditions and in their own way. Several times a year, students experience time for reflection and peer-sharing from SHG’s Campus Ministry department. Theology classes ground students in the history of Christianity, the literature of the Bible, Morality, Social Justice, and include World Religions and Honors Philosophy. The emphasis is on ethics, virtues, human values and living a life with purpose!

Recent SHG graduates are currently attending schools including Northwestern University, University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, University of Notre Dame, Washington University at St. Louis, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Iowa, Seton Hall University, College of the Holy Cross, and competitive schools from coast to coast.
