Study abroad at University of Southern Mississippi - one of the top research Institutions with reasonable tuition fees
Located in the less densely populated city and state of Hattiesburg, Mississippi in the southern region of the United States, the USM campus plans to reopen for face to face classes for Fall 2020, after delivering courses online for Spring and Summer.
The state of Mississippi has taken precautions, and case numbers have been lower than in other states, but COVID 19 will require changes in how schools operate. While details are still being worked out, USM is pleased to announce that international students continue to apply and confirm attendance for Fall, and USM plans to be prepared to welcome them.
“The Southern Miss on-campus experience has proven to be a strong indicator of student success,” said University President Rodney D. Bennett. “The safety and well-being of our students and our entire University community are our top priority, and although our fall semester will look different, our commitment to preparing our students for the world that awaits them has not wavered.”
USM is a student-centered institution and was one of the last institutions announcing the closure of residence halls. But even then, provisions were made to continue to offer housing to any student who did not have other options. That included international students, who will continue to live on campus through the summer if necessary. Not limited to housing, there are many other ways in which USM has committed to student success and well-being during the COVID pandemic.
Undergraduate International applicants have always been able to apply without SAT scores (though they are required for scholarship consideration), but now on-line versions of English exams are accepted. Both undergraduate and graduation admissions will accept unofficial transcripts and the Graduate School has waived the GRE/GMAT requirement for Masters and PhD applications for Fall 2020. USM continues to accept international applications through June 1.
International Student Services and campus-clinic staff are available to answer student questions and check on students who stayed in the US. The USM Food Pantry provides free food to students in need and i-Friends community group helps international students with transportation and grocery trips.
USM is among 130 schools holding the Carnegie designation of R1 Research Institution of Very High Research Activity. It is also one of the most reasonably priced institutions in this group of schools, allowing USM to provide a best value education, including many research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. Both graduate and undergraduate students can be considered for assistantships and scholarships, ranging from partial funding up to full tuition. Undergraduate merit scholarships are automatic with no additional application if applicants meet qualifications and deadlines. Undergraduate students applying to the Honors College (a more selective college within the university for highly motivated, academically talented students) also offers a small number of full ride scholarships
The pandemic has not stopped USM’s commitment to research. USM houses two biological and biomedical research facilities, providing technical laboratory support through preparing viral transport media (VTM) to increase volume and speed for COVID test results. And staff and students in the Mississippi Polymer Institute, School of Mathematics, and 3-D printing lab designed, mass produced, and delivered over 1,000 new, more effective respirator masks, resulting in less contamination risk for hospital staff.
Besides strong programs in Polymer Science and Engineering, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Public Health, USM is also recognized for majors in Business, Physics, Psychology, Arts, Theatre and Music, Communications, and the Entertainment and Media Industry.
USM International students have held internships at University of Texas, Austin, University of North Dakota and the Mayo Clinic. Current seniors have received acceptances to Masters and PhD programs at Purdue, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Univ of Chicago and UC San Diego to name a few.
“There are two main reasons I chose USM,” says Trung Nguyen, a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science, “low tuition, fees and cost of living and a warm climate. Also, I received assistantships that offered me the chance to collaborate with different faculty members to do research and gain teaching experience. I was most impressed with the nice atmosphere and people and my main advisor Dr. Andrew Sung helped me to get adapted.
