MYTH: Studying English will result in a much later graduation date

FACT: Students who place into our highest level of English earn Liberal Arts credit for their English skills classes and a Foreign Language waiver. This means students who place into our highest level generally graduate at the same time as their American peers or with a minimal difference.

Conditional admission at SUNY New Paltz: Myths and Facts!

MYTH: I haven't taken the TOEFL or IELTS or I got a low score, so I can't apply to an undergraduate program at New Paltz.

FACT: You can still apply to your undergraduate major without a TOEFL or IELTS score. If you are academically admissable, you can receive conditional admission through our Pathway program. Once you arrive for orientation you will be tested. The test result will determine whether you need to take some semesters of English courses first, or whether you can start your academic program the semester you arrive.

MYTH: I won't be able to take any academic classes if I also have to study English.

FACT: Students who place into our highest level have the option of taking 3-4 non-ESL credits at the university while taking ESL classes. This is a great way to get a start on your General Education courses that all SUNNY New Paltz students need to take in order to graduate.
